Equity belongs to the basic ethical principles of medicine. Every physician is expected to treat his/her patients without any discrimination.For some people, being ethical means being fair, i.e. treat every patient the same way.

But in the latest edition of the medical code of ethics (1995), the article #7 specifies that " doctors should listen, examine, advise and treat all patients with the same conscience; whatever their origin, morals, family status, whether they belong or not to a specific ethnic group, nation or religion, their handicaps or health state, their reputation or the feelings they arouse ".

In this article, it is clearly said : " with the same conscience " but not " the same way ".
What is at stake here is the status of medicine, a discipline which has so much progressed in the last decades that it can now be considered a scientific one. But a physician is not only a scientist but also an artist who is led to adapt his/her knowledge according to patients.

As much as possible and depending on the situation and the means, physicians will try to answer each problem individually according to his/her patient's affections and beliefs.
The Mediel guide follows reasoning. It gives physicians complementary information which help them take into account and respect their patients' beliefs.

It seems that this guide has met a real need. This new edition is the proof of it.
This is a good thing we can be proud of. Congratulations to those who were at the origin of the project.

Let's hope that the larger its distribution, the greater help it will be for physicians to treat their patients.
